At the quarterly meeting, hosted at DoubleTree by Hilton London ExCeL, each team member presented on the progress of their hotel teams’ sustainability efforts thus far. From implementing CO2e emissions labels on menus to transiting to light sensors & LED lighting, further examples from the initiatives shared included installing shower flow restrictors, using refillable bath amenities and bio-degradable coffee pods, just to name a few. The team also learned from industry experts’ mission : net zero, who partner with Axiom Hospitality year-round in consulting hotel Green Teams in developing and implementing authentic, measurable Environmental, Social Impact and Governance (ESG) road maps.
Further, the group heard from Axiom Hospitality’s charity partner, It’s Never You, in a moving presentation about their important work in supporting parents of children with cancer. Guest speaker and bereaved father, Ceri Menai-Davis, inspired the team to join the fight for better support for families of sick children who can face financial hardship and kicked off Axiom Hospitality’s Charity Challenge: The Battersea Park Half Marathon.
The Green Team Leaders ended the comprehensive, full-day meeting by suiting up in high-vis jackets to do their bit for the environment and to give back to the local community. Armed with tongs and shovels the group split into two groups. One team headed over to the local church to volunteer in the garden while the other went litter picking along Victoria Dock Road – returning with more than ten full bags of rubbish!
Since the meeting in March, three more Axiom managed hotels have all been granted prestigious Green Tourism, Gold eco-awards for the hotel sector. Green Tourism is an internationally recognised eco-label certification that is acknowledged worldwide as an indicator of good environmentally -friendly practice. Achieving the prestigious award is a proven way for hotel ‘green teams’ to demonstrate credible engagement with environmental, sustainability and social criteria for the hotel sector. Proactive management will ensure that the three properties adhere to standards set in areas including energy, waste, and waste management, washing and cleaning. And social elements including energy efficiency, water saving, carbon management and mindful waste reduction. At the same time focusing on biodiversity projects, community engagement, food & drink supply chains and also social elements including employee welfare and authentic, local guest experiences.
The three extended stay Residence Inn by Marriott hotels join DoubleTree by Hilton London ExCeL and DoubleTree by Hilton Bath from the Axiom Hospitality portfolio in attaining the Green Tourism Gold Award. The journey continues as all Axiom Hospitality managed hotels push for a greener future and reflect on all the great initiatives achieved thus far.
